Protecting Against Wildfires

During the summer season, due to drought and extreme heat waves all over the nation, wildfires tend to occur in our national forest, and large fires are becoming more common and severe.  According to Climate Central , compared with the 1970s, the average western U.S. wildfire season is 105 days longer, has three times as many large fires (larger than 1000 acres), and more than six times as many acres burned. Meanwhile, smoke going into our clean air causes our breathing to become more difficult.

The occurrence of wildfires has aggravated the problem of air pollution. According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that, during a large fire event, wildfire smoke can account for 25 percent of dangerous air pollution in the U.S. Especially in the U.S. West, Wildfires produce up to half of the pollution.

Moreover, this air pollution also affects people's health; smoke particles from those wildfires were blamed for health problems ranging from difficulty breathing to a projected spike in premature deaths. Particulates less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) are hazardous as they can reach the lungs profoundly and trigger or worsen health problems such as asthma and heart disease, with emerging evidence linking them to premature births.
